What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory charitable contribution assessed at 2.5% of a Muslim's qualifying accumulated wealth. It is meant to purify one's wealth, help the poor, and redistribute resources within the community.

How this calculator works

This easy-to-use 2.5% Zakat calculator sums up your total Zakatable assets (such as cash on hand, bank savings, physical gold and silver, investments, business assets, and any money owed to you) and subtracts your immediate, short-term liabilities (like pending utility bills or rent). It then automatically calculates 2.5% of the net total to give you an estimated Zakat amount.

What assets are included?

  • Cash and Savings: Money in bank accounts, cash at home, and easily accessible funds.
  • Gold and Silver: The current market value of physical gold and silver you own.
  • Investments: Value of stocks, shares, and bonds intended for trade.
  • Business Assets: Inventory and cash held by your business.
  • Money Owed to You: Debts that you realistically expect to be repaid to you soon.

What debts are deducted?

Generally, only short-term debts that must be paid immediately or within the lunar year (e.g., this month's rent, utility bills, or credit card balances) can be deducted from your Zakatable wealth. Long-term debts like large mortgages are typically treated differently and often only the upcoming year's installments are deducted.

Important disclaimer

Please note: This tool provides a mathematical estimation based on standard Islamic principles. It does not account for complex financial instruments (like 401k plans, complex mortgages, or agricultural Nisab variations). Always consult a qualified Islamic scholar or your local Imam for specific religious rulings regarding your personal financial situation.
